Slow start to day, had to check 2 stores to see what provisions we could buy. Ended up with a lot of stuff - spaghetti, Continental spaghetti and rice meals, peanut butter, mackeral in a can and museli bars. Sounds like a great diet for the next 5 + days. Had a chat with Debbie in the store who is a friend on Miriam the Cycling Dutch Girl. Loaded up the bikes and cooked a dozen eggs before finally hitting the road after 10.00 am for Archer river roadhouse 65 km away.
Lots of wild cattle up here that usually run away when we come along, but this herd ran along beside us for awhile and then raced across the road in front of Joe.1st 22 km was bitumen with gentle grades and tail wind. We hummed along, then it got harder as we hit gravel and sand.
Saw this burnt out semi along the way. We made good progress and stopped after 12:30 pm with only 26 km to go. Had a couple eggs dangling our feet in a very pleasant creek.
Back on the road we continued on the gravel and sand crossing through lots of dips. Rolled into Archer River before 3.00 pm. Paid fees, bought drinks and ice-cream and relaxed for a short time in the very nice outdoor area of the roadhouse.
Saw this sign on the way into Archer River. It usually goes the other way.
Went and set up camp, showered and then did some bike maintenance. Lucky we did because Tony had broken a back pannier screw. And then broke another while moving the rack to a different position. Fortunately he was able to borrow a drill from another camper and drill out the holes. Crisis averted!
Tony: I had loaded up one of my rear panniers with most of the food and at the last creek crossing before the roadhouse had hit it too fast which broke the bolt.
Saw this sign which reminded me of one of Michael Seddon's many cliched words of wisdom ;-))
Dinner was an Archer Burger and chips with some xxxx beer. Very pleasant watching some TV. Ordered some sandwiches to take with in the morning. Next destination is Moreton Telegraph Station 125 km away. Can't do it in 1 day with these road conditions so tomorrow night will be somewhere in the bush.
